Wellness culture is really nothing more than a diet culture hijacking with a side helping of hyper-competitive hostile perfection, self imposed misery and self blame over what we actually have absolutely no control over. Black women need real wellness, self care and the good life, and have the power to take it back.
Centering black women means that all the content and all the problems we address are communicated directly to black women, without the distraction of the white gaze, the male gaze, or any other opposition to our cause.
Food rules that reject our culture, restrict satisfying meals and are designed for the unattainable purpose of shrinking our bodies do not promote good health. They keep us from living our best lives.
It’s high time for black women to stop being the super women of the entire planet and nurture and nourish ourselves first. And we must make this happen outside of the mainstream whitewashed wellness spaces where we are invisible and unwanted.
