You’re tired, every day. There are so many things you really want to do, like start a business, travel, try a new hobby or just have more fun on the regular. But, you can’t find the time in your day to do any of this because you’re always exhausted. After the mundane requirements in your life, there’s just no energy left. And the cycle carries on and on. There’s no need to rehash all of the many well known sources of our never-ending exhaustion because we already know. Here we are focusing on the sources that we have the immediate power to change.

You start looking for a solution to all this tiredness. It doesn’t matter where you look, you’re going to find the same answer, some variation of lose weight and get healthy. Ok, no problem, you take it on full heartedly but eventually, when the excitement dies down, you realize that you’re still freakin’ tired! What happened?

You tried your best to resolve your lack of energy problem but you unknowingly sabotaged it. You ate fewer calories or some other strategy aimed at forcing your body to shrink itself instead of making you feel good. You got less rest, less relaxation,  less fun and less pleasure and adhered to more rules, more restrictions. You have been taught that this is THE winning combination, but it’s a whole lie, and that’s why you blame yourself for failure when it doesn’t work and after all that, you are still exhausted.

Very few women are just fine dealing with the worry, stress, misery, rules, obligations, shoulds, and have toos of constantly seeking somebody’s idea of “health”. Most of us aren’t meant to live this way for the rest of our lives. We crave freedom, liberation, joy and relaxation — the GOOD life. Stress has the biggest negative influence on health, so relieving stress is a much more efficient answer to getting your energy back than diet and exercise.

The mainstream wellness industry not only fails to help us energize our bodies, but it also feeds beliefs that we are flawed, that we are not attractive enough, not good enough and morally inferior if we are fat, don’t strive to adapt our bodies to please others or don’t follow the so-called healthy lifestyle rules. So you get caught in a sluggish cycle with no way out. How can you get back the energy you so desperately need to live a healthy, happy life if a so-called healthy lifestyle is really miserable and the old way of doing things won’t help?

How LifeBliss Wellness Helps Black Women Go from Sluggish Survival to Vibrant Health

What is LifeBliss?

LifeBliss is a mindset, a practice and a worldview that spiritual sensuality, joy and relaxation help you access the energy, creativity and confidence to live your happiest, healthiest life. LifeBliss Wellness is based on the ancient teachings of tantra kriya yoga, and particularly addresses the exhausting challenges of modern black women.

LifeBliss is the opposite of mainstream wellness culture, with its fear and conflict-driven patriarchal, puritanical approach to health, life and success. We as black women need joy, rest and compassion in order to thrive, not a manufactured struggle to live a healthy lifestyle. The answer to our health challenges is not to force our bodies to do things they are not meant to do. Shrinking to a certain size, restricting food, punishing ourselves with exercise and pretending to love it is a proven losing strategy. The exhaustion we experience can’t be fixed with bubble baths or spa days, either. LifeBliss helps you regain your energy, but without the toxicity of diet culture.

How it all Started, with Tantra Kriya Yoga

Back in the day I was a professional bellydancer. I was curious about spiritual movement and its divine feminine aspect to enhance my art and this caused me to stumble upon tantra kriya yoga, and over several years I studied and became a certified tantrika, or tantra teacher. Little did I know, tantra was much more than a portal to spirit dance. Over time, it became the core philosophy of LifeBliss Wellness, and much, much more. But when it comes to energy,

Tantrics address the issue of vitality in a very specific way. Not by following general rules or dogma, not by ignoring their body’s signals but by increasing awareness and understanding the sources of vitality as well as what depletes us.

What is Tantra?

Tantra, in the ancient Sanskrit (extinct) language means to weave, and it also means liberation. It is a path of divine feminine energy mastery, but don’t be weirded out by that. It is both worldly and universal, scientific and esoteric inner work. If I could describe it in its most simplistic way, tantra is a sensual spirituality practice that focuses on the senses, presence, mindfulness and non-judgmental acceptance to find your truth.

According to tantra, the body is the living temple of divinity. According to tantra, the world is beautiful. Life in the world is beautiful. Our inability to see the beauty within and without is bondage for it forces us to live in this world purposelessly. The quest for freedom here and now begins with understanding the sacred nature of our body, mind, and senses… a tantric seeks freedom in the world, not from the world. Here, the sacred and the mundane are held together in harmonious balance. Worldly success and spiritual development go hand in hand. It is a joy-driven path. It is a path of active participation in life. It is not a path for those who seek salvation after death, but a path for those who seek health, wealth, peace, and happiness while living in the world.

My Tantric Journey

I was so curious and read books and finally wanted to learn more and joined a community and was initiated into higher levels of authority in multiple intensive teacher training courses in a remote mountain retreat center in the Appalachians. I practiced for years.

Admittedly, after a while I strayed away from the tantra community because of my growing discomfort with the development of “Swami Bob’s” wholesale cultural appropriation of ancient Indian sacred symbolism and language for profit. I backed away from teaching it too, due to the common misconception that tantra is all about hedonistic sex magick  (it’s not), which was attracting myriad creeps to my coaching practice. But still, I could not deny the impact the core tantric teachings (minus the bullshit) made on me. To me, they presented practical ways to drastically improve quality of life. So, over time I was still able to embrace all of my practices, just without the fakey parts and I’m glad I did. After all, tantric practice encourages discovery of what feels good to us in each moment, and trusting that without judgment. All the other stuff was just ritualistic fluff, because all we really need from a tantrika is to create space for the student to truly connect to the mind, body and spirit energies. Simple.

My personal symbolistic inspiration for practice eventually turned away from South Asian imitations towards the embrace of more familiar Africa-inspired symbolism that visually connects me to my own divine feminine energy as a black woman, without the appropriation I had witnessed as a student of American white people teaching tantra. My small spirit altar no longer houses Shiva and Shakti or Buddha figures, instead, it centers Soleil, my custom resin goddess I designed for myself.

Tantra for a More Authentic Healthy Lifestyle

Tantra, the weaving together of mind, body and spirit allowed me the liberation to create a sensual, effortlessly chill healthy lifestyle that my friends and family began to notice and ask about.  It helped me to quiet the external false healthy lifestyle chatter and live unapologetically. It changed my life and the lives of clients I have worked with for the better.

I’m not currently teaching tantra as a complete spiritual journey to enlightenment, as I was never attracted to that purpose. I am helping tired black women do what I did: create space for tantric philosophy as an extremely powerful tool to undo and unlearn conditioning forced upon us from birth. We were taught to be obedient, to not make too much noise, to dim our light, to keep ourselves small and not cause a ruckus. We were taught these things by our elders as a means of survival in this dangerous place we live in. But now we see that not only was all of our self-suppression made in vain, (it’s still dangerous out here, whether we comply or not), but at this point we don’t want to just survive. We want to thrive! And we do not need nor have any intention to seek permission from our oppressors to do it. We want liberation now.
