It is very easy to get caught up in our workaday lives and forget that we are here to do more than just survive.
Sure, we have to pay bills and earn a living but why should we just settle for less than the good life. Black women, and particularly those of certain religious persuasions, are taught from birth not to want for too much. We are indoctrinated with the idea that we must serve a greater purpose than what we desire for ourselves, no matter what that is. In many cases this simple idea translates to us believing that our only purpose is to be in service to others, or to be everyone’s beast of burden.
From the time of human trafficking for forced labor until right now the concept of complete sacrifice of ourselves was only to serve one purpose: exploitation. There is no truth nor reality in depriving ourselves of the experiences that bring smiles to our faces and warmth into our hearts.
That we should not have authentic wants and desires for ourselves is an unhealthy way of thinking and ultimately is nothing but a scam. The whole idea was conceived to control us for the benefit of others. It is outdated Puritanical nonsense because striving to make our lives more enjoyable is not the same as being a selfish, insatiable hedonist who doesn’t give a damn about anyone else.
Quality of life depends largely on physical and mental health. So when we are denied the option to experience joy and happiness we suppress the ability to live well on any level. And, we alone get to decide how to live, just like all other human beings do. The sooner we understand that, the healthier we will be. There is a direct connection between happiness and well being that has been ignored for way too long. Although it is difficult to quantify the direct affects of happiness and joy on health, studies have shown positive links to immunity, and reducing stress hormones.
It’s noble to eat well, exercise and drink plenty of water, but what about seeking meaning and positive relationships as well as just activities that we enjoy?
Not only are joy and happiness your birthright, they also play very important roles in healthy living and overall quality of life. So if you were looking for permission to live your best life, this is it.
